Pretty sure that generation has been dead for awhile but ok, pretend one thing has something to do with another

The end of Jim Crow laws was in the 1950′s. The first black student to attend a formerly all white school was Ruby Bridges in 1960.

Here she is being walked to school under the protection of Federal Marshals because angry white people were ready to harm or kill her.

image

Here she is in 2010, eight years ago.

The generation that enforced segregation is not dead, fucko. They were our fuckin grandparents, and it was not that goddamn long ago.

Google is free.

Grandparents?!

I’m 31.

My MOM was born the year before school segregation ended.

She was NINE when MLK was shot.

She remembers race riots in her school over school segregation ending in our home state.

My MOTHER lived through this. She’s 61 years old–which means while her own health is shot, people from her generation will be around for another twenty to thirty years.

image

1956. This is not colorized. IT WAS SHOT IN COLOR. Look at that–segregation was still ongoing in the age of neon lights.

image

Same exhibit. 1956. Banana splits, poodle skirts, and the ability to get “colored” drinking water only from the white folks’ backwash. You can see the pipe connecting the white tank to the colored fountain behind the little girl in the light pink dress.

image

Less than ten years later. That’s Martin Luther King, Jr. in the middle. Have you ever seen him in a color photograph before? There are many, but for some reason … maybe because black-and-white makes things look old … nobody ever uses them.

image

Look at the bank logo in the back. Colored squares like that were a thing in the mid-to-late 1960s. The slicked-down hair on the Black girl in front says we’re not yet to the mid-1970s, and since these signs all say “Honor King” it’s quite likely this is 1969-1970. You know what else was happening in 1969? Not Woodstock, not the moon landing, although both of those things happened. No, something we think of as being much more recent.

THE INTERNET STARTED.

1969 was the launch of ARPANET, which would later become the Internet. BLACK PEOPLE WERE STILL MARCHING FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS WHEN THE INTERNET WAS STARTED.

image

This picture was taken sometime between 1956 and 1958. I don’t have a precise date on it, but the sleeveless sundress says later 1950s, the hair on Orange Plai says this was after Elvis, and the stars on the flag say that’s not a modern 50-star flag, which was first used in 1959. (We had a single year, 1958, with 49 stars.)

Ah yes. It was so long ago. Let’s get some more perspective:

Donald Trump was eight years old when school segregation was declared illegal in 1954. He was nineteen when the police beat and shot at peaceful Black protest marchers in Selma, Alabama and twenty-two when MLK was assassinated by the FBI for trying to encourage desegregation.

Hillary Clinton was seven when school segregation was declared, eleven when it went into effect, and eighteen when Selma happened.

Bernie Sanders was thirteen when the integration ruling occurred, 19 when Ruby Bridges started going to a formerly all-white school, and twenty-four when Selma happened. Joe Biden is only a year younger than Bernie.

Elizabeth Warren was eleven when Ruby started her new school, fifteen when Selma happened, eighteen when MLK was shot.

You will notice that all of these people are running for President, or were rumored to be running for President, this year. They’re not just alive, they’re thriving. And they were all alive for desegregation–in fact Trump, Clinton, and Sanders were all old enough to either endorse or oppose what happened at Selma.

But let’s keep looking, because they’re probably outliers, right?

Hm. Three of MLK’s children are still alive. They’re between 56 and 62 years old. (His elder daughter died of unknown causes; her family suspects an undiagnosed heart condition.) In fact one of his siblings is still alive, and she was born before him! She’s 96.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Yeah, she was 21 when school integration was made the law of the land. And she’s still serving on the Supreme Court.

But tell me again how long ago it was.

I’m sure the people from those generations are all dead, after all.

my father was graduated from high school when the civil rights act was passed and was in his last semester of college when MLK was killed. i was born in the 2000s

people who remember segregation are very well alive

I am in my 30s, and my father remembers when his elementary school was integrated. His grandfather whooped him for playing with one of his Black classmates. He played college football with one of the people who was depicted in Remember the Titans, a film about the integration of a high school.

My father, who is still not quite old enough to get a senior discount at Denny’s, went to college with people who were in high school when their schools were finally integrated.

Please, please report people who put their ko-fi or Patreon on their AO3 without mercy. Just click the link at the bottom of the page that says Policy Questions and Abuse Reports and say the user is engaging in monetisation. Say where you saw their ko-fi link or mention (author’s note, whatever) and copy the info on their user profile, too, in order to make it easier for the volunteers.

REPORT THEM ALL

If you’re concerned, there’s nothing punitive about this, it’s just enforcement of the TOS they agreed to when they signed up. And there’s no real risk of the fic being removed, either. AO3 will contact the author and nicely ask them to remove the link, and that’s it.

Yeah, that too.

Literally the only downside is making too much work for the Abuse team. (Cry me a river, guys. In my day, we had like 2 active people, and even at the much smaller size, that was a problem.)

If you want, you can let authors know it’s not allowed and then report their asses if they’re rude about it. Or you can just report them in the first place.

But this bullshit should be stamped out.

Wait can someone explain what I’m missing here because it sounds like a bunch of whiny babies being upset that people are monetizing their own work. I get its a site policy but 1. Why are you being a cop you losers and 2. Who cares? Why is it a rule?

If I’m missing something here I’m genuinely curious. Who is it hurting to drop a ko-fi on your page? Or do y'all just love being cops?

I did not donate seven years of free labor to build AO3 so that some other dipshit could monetize my work.

And yes, it is monetizing AO3 itself because the whole reason people want to put kofi links there is that it’s easy to find fics on AO3. AO3 also lacks constant competition from other ads.

AO3 is as awesome as it is because we built it to not be monetized.

People who don’t get that are shitting on the people who made and still make AO3 possible with their work and their donations.

Go post your kofi links on a corporate site like tumblr/twitter/etc., not one built by your fellow fans. Disobeying the AO3 rules is just rude.

Look, when you do whatever on a big social media site, you’re fucking with corporate overlords.

When you’re doing stupid shit on AO3, you’re coming to a dinner party I planned and hosted and then pissing into the flower arrangement in the middle of the table.

The only whiny babies here are the ones demanding other fans provide them with a storefront for free.

You don’t sell your vegetables at a charitable food bank. You rent a booth at the farmer’s market.

You don’t set up your book kiosk in the lobby of a public library. You go to a flea market, or somewhere else that allows you to set up a book kiosk.

AO3 is fandom’s food bank. It is fandom’s public library. It is not your storefront. If you want to sell your work, don’t do it on a nonprofit website volunteers built for the *explicit* purpose of creating an anti-capitalist fandom oasis.

There’s also the VERY REAL problem that the main defense of transformative work – aka fanfiction – to keep us from getting our asses sued into the stratosphere by Disney, Marvel, etc. is that we don’t profit from it. If you are writing someone else’s IP for money without their permission, they CAN sue you, and if it’s somebody as big as Fox, Disney, etc., they WILL sue you. The main way I can tell fandom has done a good job of making safe spaces for ourselves is that these young’uns coming up don’t remember getting Cease & Desist letters from very scary lawyers.

So that’s why you report people putting kofi links on AO3 - because by doing so, they’re painting a giant fucking target on fandom’s back.

Hey remember when they found over 200 bodies of native children buried behind a residential school and the world cared for… what, a week?

They’ve counted about 6,000-7,000 now, for those of you who do still care

It should NOT fall on Indigenous people’s shoulders to keep this known still. We’ve been doing that for generations at this point and NO ONE wants to listen to us.

We’re tired, mourning and constantly reopening our trauma and pain to keep people caring about us. It’s terrible.

I should start by noting that I am white, and not Canadian, and that if op wants me to remove this comment for any reason, please let me know.

This is a map of all the residential schools in Canada:

image

[link to the article it’s attached to, it’s interactable there, so you can get a better look around]

Each dot on this map represents a residential school. Blue dots mean the school is considered completely searched. Yellow dots mean they are either in the process of being searched or there are plans to be searched. Red dots indicate that no search has happened and that no search is currently planned

There were more than 130 residential schools in Canada. This map suggests that only six have been fully searched, and a little more than a dozen partially searched (I counted 15 yellow dots). That leaves at least 109 schools completely untouched.

Let that sink in; if 6,000-7,000 unmarked, indigenous children’s graves were found by searching less than a fifth of all the schools, how many are still undiscovered.

Wikipedia estimates that the body count could be over 50,000, and honestly, that could be a low estimate

image

[ID: A map of Canada with dozens of dots on it, 6 of which are blue and 7 of which are yellow; the rest are red. Later there is a screenshot from wikipedia reading, “Estimates range from 3,200 to over 50,000 children that were killed. Most of the recorded student deaths at residential schools took place before the 1950s. /end ID]

The residential school system was a calculated, open, and forthrightly declared attempt at the total genocide of all indigenous peoples in this country. It was literally meant to wipe them out entirely, through a combination of attrition and assimilation.

Never forget that this is what Canada is really built upon.

These are the residential schools in the U.S. I’ve mapped out the ones in California and there are articles about burials on these sites, some marked and some not.

I hope Secretary Haaland’s Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative investigates every single one; their report is Due on April 1, 2022,

image

It’s now July 2023, so let’s look up the report:

On May 11, 2022, Secretary Haaland and Assistant Secretary Newland released Volume 1 of the investigative report. This report lays the groundwork for the continued work of the Interior Department to address the intergenerational trauma created by historical federal Indian boarding school policies. It reflects an extensive and first-ever inventory of federally operated schools, including profiles and maps.

The investigation found that from 1819 to 1969, the federal Indian boarding school system consisted of 408 federal schools across 37 states or then territories, including 21 schools in Alaska and 7 schools in Hawaii. The investigation identified marked or unmarked burial sites at approximately 53 different schools across the school system. As the investigation continues, the Department expects the number of identified burial sites to increase.

White American here, and I want to give an update to Sec. Haaland’s work above- as of July 9th, the archaeological work is now underway to locate the site of a residential school and the associated mass graves of murdered Indigenous children who were taken there. AP News covers this here. Judi gaiashkibos, ED of the Nebraska Commission of Indian Affairs whose mother was taken to this school, is currently in Nebraska and leading efforts to bring these children home. As of the publish date they had not yet located graves in-person, but ground-penetrating radar indicates mass graves could be present at the site. Sec. Haaland’s office is currently working on a second volume of the above report with more information. The difficult work is being done, overdue, and only when we have our first Indigenous Secretary of the Interior. That doesn’t escape me, and I encourage my fellow settlers to seek out avenues to help this necessary work continue.

Explaining to all companies that the three requirements for me to use a social media with any frequency are:

  • A chronological follow-only feed, ideally which I can set as default
  • Anonymity (my real name and face are not required)
  • Have a desktop version

You may call me boomer or whatever but if a social media doesn’t have bare minimum these three things then I will never use it ever. I won’t even make an account. You can suck at everything else but these are non-negotiable. The fact that they are anathema to profitability does not matter to me. If you cannot provide me these three things then I will simply not use any social media at all.

A series of tweets by Twitter user @Bitterstaff (John Bickerstaff) from May 19, 2023. The first tweet links a Deadline.com article with the headline "Disney to remove dozens of series from Disney+ and Hulu" while Bickerstaff comments, "They gave us six months. Not even. This business has become absolutely cruel." His next tweet says, "Before you say tax write-off: these shows have already been released and so can't be a tax write-off. And in the case of Willow, they own the property outright. The only conclusion is that this is to get out of paying residuals. During a strike." His third tweet says, "And look, eternal streaming libraries are not sustainable. We're all going to have to adjust to that at some point. But to spend [REDACTED] on a show and then disappear it six months later is just bad business."ALT

on the announcement that Disney+ is removing a plethora of shows and films from its service, please read these tweets from Willow writer John Bickerstaff. this is not a tax writeoff like Batgirl, because these projects have already been released. this is a move designed to cut off financial support in the form of residuals, and break the spirit of the strike. here is the deadline article that lists the films/shows that will be removed.

as always, donate to the entertainment community fund, vocally support the WGA online and irl, or join a picket in a major US city if you can. let them know they can’t keep getting away with things like this.

I got a marketing email from hobbycraft to say that they’re now selling plush pumpkins ahead of halloween

so of course I went to the website, which led me to this delightful photo series showing the different sizes available:

Three photos of the same black man, holding a series of plush pumpkins. The first pumpkin (labelled small) fits within the palm of his hand, and he is looking down delighted by the tiny pumpkin. The second pumpkin (labelled medium) is still hand sized, and he is looking at the camera with a smile. The third pumpkin (labelled large) is balanced on his hand to the side, and he is looking at it in amusementALT
Two more photos of the same man holding larger plush pumpkins. The first (labelled XL) is cradled in both hands in front of his chest, and he is looking down at the pumpkin. The second (labelled XXL) covers about half his chest, and is being held out in front of him with a happy/excited look on his faceALT

I love and support this man and his pumpkin collection

i like how the series of photos make it look like one single pumpkin that is growing extremely quickly. this man is a pumpkin wizard and he loves his job

Marvel Comics #1000: We’re Calling Him Ben

image

I feel this is an important addition. He saves so many people on a regular basis that this just keeps happening. And he feels so much for his uncle that the answer is always the same.

…. This hits different when you realise he’s canonically Jewish

Can you please elaborate ? I’m curious as to what it means

You can read a pretty good summary of it here, but as (most likely) Ashkenazi Jews, PP probably follows the minhag (custom) that says “that by naming a newborn child after a deceased loved one, the soul lives on through the child.” (Quoted from the site linked above.) And given how his Uncle Ben died, it just makes it all the more sadder tbh.

another fine distinction is that the soul isn’t thought to be reincarnated, it’s that the memory of the loved one is kept alive and more good deeds in life can be inspired by (and thus partially attributed to) the dead. ‘may their memory be a blessing’–the memory of the deceased is honored, respected, and who they were is retold as inspiration to the next generation.

ben’s memory is a blessing. that’s extremely jewish. spiderman is inspired not just by the shame of his death, but by the moral teachings he’d given peter in life. and his name given to these babies is another part of it: babies named in spiderman’s honor are also very honestly and truly named in his honor, and continue to be blessings to the world.

it’s very joyous, i think. very sweet.

We’ve heard about the seeming contrast of creators that make these super happy saccharine pieces of art being bitter people whose lives seem to be filled with agony whereas horror creators that thrive in the grotesque all seem to be super happy and positive people, the usual “Miyazaki Hayao vs Itou Junji” kinda beat.

There’s a similar, slightly overlapping dynamic between cuisine and blacksmithing. Chefs are the single angriest existences in the world and would piss on your grave seconds after stuffing your freshly gutted corpse in it. Blacksmiths are jovial, usually quiet dudes that work machinery and think your dagger is still very cool even if it’s got some balance issues.

Now, of course this is making reference to the Ramsay style of food shows, which is not the universal experience when it comes to the genre – I’m more of a Cutthroat Kitchen kind of guy, because I like Mario Party – but it’s always fun to me to go through an episode of Hell’s Kitchen where Ramsay annihilates his own vocal chords screaming “FUCKING DONKEY” and “IT’S RAW”, then right after, watch some old Forged In Fire and see the Filipino weapon master, Marcaida, test a short sword one of the contestants made and it fucking explodes into shards without nary a scratch on the pig’s carcass, obviously the shittiest weapon you could possibly make, damascus steel shards flying embedded in his arm, and he’ll calmly, with his signature friendly smile, lovable demeanor, and charismatic gait, face the contestant and be like

image

“Well, you see, Bob, your blade unfortunately suffered a catastrophic malfunction, and it can’t be tested any further. However, the handle on your weapon allowed for some very good balance and ease of swing, it fits my palm perfectly and it swings very easy. Despite the blade fracturing in 7 uneven fragments, we can see that the blade didn’t chip or roll at all. Good work, Bob” then they’ll shake on it and Bob is eliminated, and all he’ll say is “I’m sorry to have punctured 4 blood vessels on Marcaida, but end of the day, the other smiths were simply better, and I’m proud of them. I just gotta go and work on my fundamentals back at home now :)” meanwhile Hell’s Kitchen’s contestants are having a shootout with Glocks in their dorm because someone made fun of someone else’s raw scallops.
